Bring your dining room into the modern age with these design tips.

If your dining room is looking a little dated and dingy, perhaps it's time for a makeover to boost your design style. By making some simple changes, you can turn your dining room into a refreshing, new space that feels updated,  refreshing, and inviting for family dining and dinner and guests. Our real estate agents have 7 easy tips that will give your dining room the wow factor.

  1. Refresh the Walls with New Paint
Changing the paint color in your dining room is one of the easiest and fastest ways to give your room a fresh new look. Whether you choose a crisp shade of white, a soft pastel, or a bold, dramatic color, you can change the look of your dining room in less than one day for minimal costs. For best results, choose an interior paint with a flat or eggshell finish, use a quality paint roller for the walls, and brushes for the trim.

  1. Add Texture or Patterned Wallpaper
If you want to make a change that updates your design style, think about installing wallpaper with texture or colorful patterns. Textured wallpapers like burlap, grasscloth, and linen add an elegant, traditional style, while wallpapers with large, colorful patterns add a contemporary style with a bit of whimsy. Wallpaper is not as easy as paint, so it's best to hire a professional paper hanger for good results.

  1. Reupholster the Dining Chairs
If you eat family meals or entertain guests in your dining room, it may be time to reupholster your chairs with those worn seat cushions and stains. If you want to keep the chairs, head to a local fabric store and find a durable fabric that will be easy to clean. You can reupholster all of the chairs in the same fabric or choose a coordinating fabric for the two chairs at each end of the table.

  1. Refinish the Furniture
Your dining room may include an old-fashioned dining room set with a wooden table, china cabinet, and sideboard that's been in your home for a while. To change the look and modernize the mood, consider painting one of those pieces in a pop of color that adds contemporary style. Old traditional furniture can make a room look boring and dated.

  1. Swap Out Dated Light Fixtures
Many older South Bend homes for sale still have the original ceiling lights, chandeliers, and sconces that came with the house. To avoid rooms that look dated and dim, swap out the old fixtures and install new ones with style and better lighting. For an updated look, consider recessed ceiling lights, contemporary chandeliers and sconces, and colorful glass pendants.

  1. Put Down a New Area Rug
Adding an area rug with a modern pattern to your dining room can quickly change the ambiance in the room. Whether you prefer tone-on-tone stripes, florals, abstract patterns, or beautiful woven wool, make sure your rug properly fits the room and sits comfortably under the table and all of the chairs when they are pushed back to get up from the table.

  1. Bring in Some Greenery
Bringing live plants into any room creates a more comfortable space that feels lived in and inviting. Consider at least one tall floor plant in a corner like a ficus, a fiddle-leaf fig, or a weeping fig to make a statement. Choose smaller potted plants in decorative containers for the sideboard and fresh flowers in a vase or a special container for the dining room table.
