Whether you're a scientist who studies constellations or a dreamer who enjoys looking at the stars, South Bend is the perfect place. South Bend offers a variety of outdoor events throughout the year for people of all ages who love astronomy. If you're looking for an interesting, relaxing evening in South Bend, our real estate agents recommend visiting one of our special outdoor spots for stargazing.
Michiana Astronomical Society – 103 Apple Street, Walkerton, IN
The Michiana Astronomical Society is made up of a group of individuals from the South Bend/Mishawaka area who share a common interest in astronomy. Monthly meetings take place at the Centre branch of the South Bend Library located at 1150 E Kern Road in South Bend. There are also outreach events to share astronomy with the South Bend community.
In addition to regular monthly meetings, South Bend members also meet monthly on the weekend before the new Moon. These meetings are held at dark sky observing sites with remote locations and moonless nights. These sites offer great opportunities for people to gather and stargaze at star clusters, nebula, and dim celestial galaxies. During warmer months, the Michiana Astronomical Society hosts star parties that introduce the wonders of stargazing to interested families. At each star party, you can view the sky through various telescopes and ask questions about astronomy.
Potato Creek Park – 25601 State Road 4, North Liberty

The Kennedy Planetarium – 609 North Olive Street, South Bend
The Kennedy Planetarium offers programs designed to meet the needs of Indiana students of all ages. Although programs vary in nature, they all support learning about different things in science. Programs feature 3 basic categories:
Interactive Programs
Interactive programs are live presentations that explore certain subjects by using the planetarium's simulation system. These programs allow students to interact with the planetarium instructor and ask questions about the planets, the solar system, and astronomy.
Fulldome Films
This program lets students explore a variety of topics through films on demand. Students can stargaze, explore the planets, learn about the solar system, watch an Aurora Storm, discuss the ecosystem, and ask questions about films they watch.
Laser Light Shows
South Bend students love the Laser Light Shows at the Planetarium, which are available to students PK-12th grade and usually last from 40 to 60 minutes. Favorites include Laser Beatles with classic rock hits, Lasers in Space, Kinder Bop for kids ages 3 to 5, and Pink Floyd with classic hits for the older kids.
