Fireplaces can be challenging to decorate since they're all different and it's easy to decorate too much. Here's how you can decorate your's like a pro.

The fireplace is a focal point of many homes. We like to imagine a fire crackling in the fireplace, even when it's not. We arrange our furniture around the fireplace and hang our flat-screen TVs over it, so it's only natural that it should be well-decorated. Here are a few tips from our real estate agents for how to decorate your fireplace like a pro.

  • Choose a focal point.
One major design element on or above your fireplace mantle will ground the entire arrangement. You might choose a painting, coordinating prints, a large mirror, or a decorative clock to serve that purpose. As an alternative to the traditional painting hung over the mantle, artwork or even a mirror can be leaned against the wall for a casual, trendy look.

  • Layer.
Part of putting together an interesting arrangement is layering. For instance, if you have artwork leaned against the wall instead of hung, you can choose a second, smaller piece of artwork that complements the first and overlap it over the first one a little. Layering means that everything in the arrangement on your mantle is overlapping, making it look interesting from any angle and any point in the room.

  • Add in different heights.
A key part of making your arrangement work is having varying heights and shapes of objects. For instance, in front of your leaned and layered artwork, you could have a few smaller knickknacks, while a vase of tall flowers on the side will serve to draw the eye upward. Even if you mount your television on the wall above the fireplace, you can add depth to your decor and soften the look of the TV by layering with some smaller decor, greenery, or string lights along the front of the mantle.

  • Incorporate greenery.
Never overlook the importance of decorating with houseplants. Adding a little bit of living greenery to your mantle will make everything seem both cleaner and warmer, plus being surrounded by plants is better for your mental state. Our agents have found that decorating with plants makes South Bend homes for sale more appealing to buyers, too, making this a great way to stage a home for sale.

  • Be selective.
Decorating your fireplace doesn't mean throwing a bunch of random stuff up there and hoping for the best. Choose items that will go together well and create the kind of layered effect that you want. If you're staging your home to sell, learn from other Elkhart homes for sale and make sure there's nothing too personal on the mantle, such as family portraits.

  • Don't overdo it.
A layered look gives the eye something interesting to look at, but if you add too much, you'll just make your fireplace mantle look cluttered. To avoid this effect, set up your arrangement one item at a time, and watch for that point at which interesting and decorative just turns to messy. Remember, when it comes to decor, especially when staging a home for sale, less is always more!

The fireplace is the most natural focal point of any living room, so it's important to decorate it well. For more suggestions on staging your home for sale, or if you're ready to start the search for your dream home, contact us today.
