Savory Sandwiches In South Bend
Sandwiches are such an underrated food... but not on November 3rd! On this day, we celebrate the sandwich and all the creativity and convenience it represents. How else can you hold an entire meal all in one hand?
You may have heard the story of how the sandwich came to be. The story goes that the Earl of Sandwich, a little town in England, asked for his lunch to be served as a piece of meat between two pieces of bread so that he could eat and play cards at the same time. Eventually, the idea caught on, and the meal was named after him. Whether that's true or not, the sandwich has become an entire category of culinary creativity. Whether you want to celebrate Sandwich Day or just really like sandwiches, here are a few local sandwich shops our real estate agents recommend.
- Oh Mamma's On the Avenue
Located at 1202 East Mishawaka Avenue in South Bend, Oh Mamma's serves up a number of traditional favorites every day. Their house favorite, the 3MC Panini, stands for "3 meat + 1 cheese." They also have an excellent "Triple Cheese" grilled cheese panini, and their tasty Farmhouse Sub, which is a meatless sandwich with feta, your choice of mozzarella or provolone, cucumber, and your choice of a spicy or mild condiment. Oh Mamma's is open Tuesday through Friday 10 am until 6 pm, and Saturday 10 am until 4 pm. - The Early Bird Eatery
True to their name, The Early Bird Eatery is only open until 2 pm Wednesday through Sunday. As you might expect with their hours, they serve a lot of breakfast foods, but they also have a great sandwich menu to take you into those lunch hours. Treat yourself to an indulgent Monte Cristo, or surprise your senses with a tasty red lentil falafel sandwich. They also offer a "BAART," which is a bacon, avocado, arugula, and roasted tomato sandwich with an egg on it. You'll find the Early Bird at 231 South Michigan Street in South Bend, making it a perfect place to relax after touring South Bend homes for sale. - Fatbird
Located at 103 West Colfax Avenue in South Bend, Fatbird is a trendy modern eatery with a wide variety of sandwiches on their menu. Steer away from the usual fare with three different kinds of fried chicken sandwiches or a chicken salad sandwich. In addition to their "bird" sandwiches, they also have an excellent Cuban, a traditional po'boy, and a worthy fried snapper sandwich. Fatbird is open from 11:30 to 9 pm Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 pm Friday and Saturday. - Midwest Kosher Deli
You'll never get as good a sandwich as you will at a good kosher deli like Midwest. Their menu has everything from Reuben to Yiddeshe, schnitzel to falafel sandwiches. Located at 560 West Ireland Road in South Bend, Midwest Kosher Deli is open for lunch Fridays and Sundays with later hours Monday through Thursday and closed on Saturdays. - Gary Z's Sub Shop
This sandwich shop is located a little farther south, perfect if you're shopping for Buchanan homes for sale. Gary Z's Sub Shop serves up all your traditional favorites, such as Italian subs, turkey, ham, roast beef, and vegetarian. They're located at 254 East Front Street in Buchanan and are open for lunch Monday through Friday.
