There's nothing more rewarding than keeping a beautiful garden. It boosts your home's curb appeal to have a well-landscaped yard with lots of beautiful flowers, of course, but even better is when you can share the bounty by attracting wildlife such as hummingbirds to your garden. Here are a few tips from our real estate agents on boosting your curb appeal by planting a hummingbird garden.
- Plan your garden for continuous blooms.
You'll notice that the most well-landscaped South Bend homes for sale plan their yards with all the seasons in mind so that there's always something interesting to see in the garden. That kind of planning is especially important in a hummingbird garden. Most flowers only bloom for a short time, so plan a variety of flowers with different blooming times throughout the spring and summer. You can encourage many plants to bloom more by removing or "deadheading" wilted flowers.
- Avoid using chemicals.
Chemical fertilizers and pest control may make your job as a gardener easier, but they can be damaging to the local ecosystem. Chemicals may harm bugs, birds, and bees, and you may deter hummingbirds from visiting your garden since they eat bugs too. Avoid harsh chemicals when tending to your garden, and find gentler, more bird-friendly ways to fertilize and control pests.
- Supplement with strategically placed hummingbird feeders.
Even the most carefully planned garden may have gaps in blooms, so you may want to supplement with some hummingbird feeders. You can place these in strategic positions around the yard, but be sure not to put them too close together, or in line of sight from one another. Hummingbirds can be territorial, and you don't want to make it too easy for one bully to chase off all the other birds.
- Keep the nectar fresh.
If you're supplementing with hummingbird feeders, you can make your own part by boiling 4 parts water with 1 part sugar. Refill the feeders every few days, as this mixture will spoil if left in the feeders for too long. The feeders may need to be cleaned with white vinegar and water periodically. Also, be sure to position the feeders so that they'll get shade in the afternoon, preventing the precious nectar inside from spoiling.
- Emphasize the color red.
Hummingbirds are attracted to bright colors, but especially to the color red. This means that you can attract them by using lots of red and other bright colors in your garden. Hummingbird feeders are often red in color, and you can use red yard decor to attract them as well. Their favorite flowers come in a variety of bright colors, including red. The one thing you shouldn't do is add food coloring to their nectar, as this can actually harm them.
- Provide a water source.
Water is necessary for all life, including hummingbirds, so don't stop with planting flowers or hanging feeders! Hummingbirds prefer water that drips or gently sprays, as they enjoy bathing. A gentle fountain with multiple levels is a great water source for hummingbirds, or you can install a mister from a home improvement store, as hummingbirds will "take a shower" by flying back and forth through a gentle mist.
