Photo displays can be a challenge to put together, but with these tips, they'll be showstoppers.

When you move into a new house, one of the first priorities — after setting up the kitchen and bathroom, of course — is taking care of the little details that really make it feel like home. Putting up family photos is a great way to do that.

But wouldn't it also be nice to create something new with those old photos? Our real estate agents have a few ideas about how you can breathe new life into your pictures by hanging them in unique and innovative ways that really take your decor to another level.

Go Big or Go Home
Blowing up photos into poster-sized art is a fun way to give your living space a simple, yet dramatic flair. It works best with photos that are more scenic and landscape-oriented (close-up portraits at that scale can be a little overpowering). Try hanging just one oversized photo on a wall, and keep the frame simple. Creating oversized prints works best if you still have the film negatives, but it can also be done with digital photos if you have high-resolution files.

Scout for Vintage Frames
Nothing transforms your treasured photographs like vintage frames. They're especially effective if you live in a historic home with classic architecture. Vintage picture frames can capture all kinds of moods — fun, funky, romantic, maybe even a little creepy — depending on what vibe you're going for. Take a look around at local antique stores, flea markets, estate sales, even eBay or Craigslist, until you find what you're looking for.

Create a Gallery Wall
This is kind of the opposite of the "go big" idea. Find a wall in your home that has a lot of wide-open space, and transform it into a stylish gallery of all your family memories. There are a few ways to go about creating this effect, and a lot of designers like to use matching frames and/or matted photos to create a unified effect. You might also choose photographs that all have a complementary color scheme or all black-and-white. As far as the size and orientation of your photographs, gallery walls tend to be the most eye-catching if you mix things up.

The Grid Effect
Arranging a few choice photos in a neat grid gives your home a slick, modern look. It's a great way to arrange photographs above a dresser or vanity. This tactic tends to work best with three rows of three photos, nine in total, arranged in a square. You could also arrange four pictures in two rows of two. We've seen sixteen photos lined up in four rows of four, but that can get a little busy. In any case, choose pictures that are identical in size and orientation, and line them up carefully.

The Basic Wire Mount
For a fun, laid-back look, hanging a string of photographs on a wire (kind of like clothes on a clothesline) is a quick, crafty option. Actually, twine and clothespins are a great way to create this effect. Simply run a length of twine between two nails or eye-hooks on the wall, and pin the photos to the twine. Wire and any other type of clips/fasteners can work too. The best part is, it's easy to switch out the photos if you take new ones or change your mind about what you want to display.
