If your home feels a little cluttered, some minimalism tips may be helpful. Here are some ideas to test in your home.

Whether or not you consider yourself one, decorating like a minimalist can help you take your decor to the next level. Minimalism means less clutter, less feeling crowded in your own home, and more clean, open spaces that encourage relaxation. Minimalist decor is great for selling your home, too! Homebuyers love neutral decor in South Bend homes for sale, as it enables them to better imagine their own lives in those spaces.

Here are five tips for improving your home's decor with minimalist ideas.

  1. Use muted palettes. One of the hallmarks of minimalist decor is the use of neutral colors. For instance, it's not uncommon to see a lot of whites, grays, and beiges. Rather than making a room boring, these colors enable you to produce a tranquil atmosphere and to use the occasional bright color to draw the viewer's attention.

  2. Choose clean lines. Another thing you'll notice about minimalist decor is all the clean lines. Think furniture with clean, straight lines instead of curves, and cabinets with no hardware for a smoother finish. This reduces the visual clutter in a room that is caused by busy furniture. If you are staging a home for sale, our real estate agents suggest assessing the lines of your furniture and determining how you can create or emphasize that clean look.

  3. Clear the windows. Minimalist decor gets its fresh, airy atmosphere in part from all the natural light. Remove any heavy, fussy window treatments from your windows and let that light in! If you have lots of big windows, showcase them by not replacing the window treatments at all. If you need some sort of privacy, opt for stylish blinds that can be kept tucked out of sight when not in use, or thin curtains or sheers that will let light through.

  4. Showcase empty spaces. Minimalism rejects the need to fill every space, whether it be on the wall or the room in general. Instead, you can use empty spaces to draw attention to the things you do choose to have in the room or on the walls. Think fewer furniture pieces with more space around them, and less wall art so that what you do choose to hang up really gets noticed.

  5. Declutter. We saved the hardest thing for last! The most important aspect of minimalism is the lack of clutter. Get rid of all of the little miscellaneous objects you don't need, and as for what you do feel strongly about keeping, find a space for it where it can be tucked away and out of sight. This is especially important if you're selling your home! If you're not ready for that ready of minimalism, you can store some of your things temporarily while you sell your home, just to avoid the cluttered look in showings.

A completely minimalist style of living may seem too extreme, especially if you live a very cluttered, busy lifestyle, but don't feel like you have to convert totally. By following just a few ideas, you can enjoy a cleaner, more tranquil environment at home. For more tips on how to best stage your home for selling, contact us today.
