Don't let your home get cluttered with rarely used items. Here's how you can make your attic an optimal storage space.

Looking for more storage space in your home? You may have overlooked a surprising amount of storage, right over your head! Your attic can be an excellent place for long-term storage if you set it up correctly. If you're not sure how to go about doing that, our real estate agents recommend talking with a contractor to get you started. In addition, here are a few tips to give you a general idea of how to turn your attic into a usable storage space.

  1. Check for leaks. First and foremost, make sure there aren't any leaks in the roof that could potentially damage the things you store in the attic. Check the underside of the roof for stains or signs of rot, especially around things that go through to the outside, such as chimneys and vent pipes. And speaking of vent pipes, make sure your bathroom vents go all the way through to the outside, rather than ending in the attic. You don't want your storage space to be filled up with warm, moist air.

  2. Ventilate properly. It's important for all attics to be properly ventilated, both to minimize a damaging buildup of heat and moisture, but also to keep the temperature of the home more comfortable. If you'll be storing things in the attic, it becomes especially important. Make sure there are sufficient vents, and consider installing an attic fan as well to help move the hot, humid air out.

  3. Install insulation. If what you'll be storing in the attic isn't sensitive to temperature changes, you might not want to worry about installing insulation, but if you want the attic to be truly useful storage space, you will need to assess your attic's insulation needs. If your attic wasn't intended to be used, the insulation may be on the floor of the attic instead of on the underside of the roof. Changing the insulation of your attic may require the assistance of a contractor to make sure everything is done correctly.

  4. Check for or install a weight-bearing floor. There's a chance your attic may not have a weight-bearing floor if it wasn't intended for storage. Additionally, you'll have to ensure that the jousts can support the weight of a floor plus the weight of people, boxes, and possibly even furniture. This is another concern you might want to address with a contractor, just to be sure it's done right and doesn't put the structural integrity of your home at risk.

  5. Design your storage to work with the space. Remember that in an attic, you will likely have a sloped ceiling to work with when you plan your storage space. One solution is to install a short wall where the ceiling drops to only four feet high, with doors to create closet space behind the wall. The wall will enable you to install shelving or offer a sturdy vertical guide for stacking boxes. Plus it just looks nice, as our agents have seen in other South Bend homes for sale.

It may take some work to turn your attic space into useful storage, but it'll be well worth it in the long run, especially if you intend to resell your home someday. Plentiful storage is one thing many homebuyers look for in their search for the perfect home. If you're curious about how your home and its available storage space stacks up to the competition, contact us today to schedule with one of our agents.
