Thanksgiving Dessert Alternatives - Cressy & Everett Real Estate

Thanksgiving dinner may look a bit different this year for most of us, so why not try something different for dessert? If you've been looking at South Bend homes for sale this fall, you'll probably also want to simplify your meal prep and perhaps skip the homemade pie. The good news? There are scores of fantastic recipes out there that prove Thanksgiving dessert doesn't have to be pie.

Here are some new riffs on Thanksgiving dessert:

  1. Pumpkin Truffles
Need that pumpkin fix? Pumpkin Truffles should do the trick. Plus, what's better than bite-size so that your guest can keep the sampling size down and try several different desserts? The ingredients are cream cheese and graham crackers, which hold everything together, plus confectioners' sugar, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, and pumpkin puree. Include chocolate for dippings. The type of chocolate is up to you.

This recipe takes some prep time, so be forewarned. The dough must be chilled for 3 hours; after the dough balls are formed, they must be refrigerated; and then the chocolate must be melted for dipping. The truffles are made of cream cheese, so this dessert should be chilled until served.

  2. Cranberry Bliss Cookies
If you enjoy cranberries, but sauce isn't your deal, then how about cookies with cranberries combined with white chocolate drops? Cranberry Bliss Cookies add a touch of elegance that your guests will love. If they remind you of Starbuck's Cranberry Bliss Bars, it's no accident. These are a simplified version, with a hint of orange and cinnamon. Note: This recipe calls for shortening. Many of us avoid using shortening these days, but it does make soft, chewy cookies. The vinegar also boosts the baking soda's reaction time to make the cookies rise.

This is a relatively simple, straightforward recipe. Just assemble and mix all ingredients and bake for 9 minutes.

  3. Pumpkin Creme Bruleé
Not everyone loves pumpkin, but even those who don't won't be able to resist Pumpkin Creme Brul. As with any creme bruleé, expect to expend a bit of labor: whisk egg yolks and sugar; heat cream till it bubbles; stir hot cream into egg yolks; stir in pumpkin and spices; transfer to custard cups and bake them in a pan of boiling water 3 minutes. Cool the cups, then cover and refrigerate for 4 hours. And don't forget the creme bruleé torch for caramelizing the sugar.

  4. Apple Spice Angel Food Cake
If you're running out of time and really need a simple cake – and you don't want another cranberry or pumpkin dessert – try Apple Spice Angel Food Cake. It's also a great alternative for those who might want something sweet that, at 135 calories a slice, doesn't blow their calorie budget.

Combine and beat angel food cake mix and water, adding applesauce, pecans, and pie spice afterward. Cook for 45 minutes, then cool. Serve it with whipped topping and apple slices.
