Starter Home - Homebuyers - Cressy & Everett Real Estate

What a wonderful time of life. You're starting a family and you and your partner are ecstatic, contemplating how things will be for the three of you. Savor these moments, because there are some challenges ahead, as you well can imagine. One of the foremost may be finding a home for the three of you among South Bend homes for sale.

The home you're in may be fine for now, or even when your child is an infant. But things can change quickly. To be sure, even now you may be thinking how your tiny kitchen just won't be big enough for three. So let's get going and see what kind of wisdom we can glean from the recommendations of our REALTORS®, who've been down this track before.

Before Baby Makes 3, What to Look for in a Home

  • Home Size
Size matters, and will matter even more in ways you haven't even thought of once your bundle of joy arrives. Sure, for the first six months, baby may sleep in your bedroom but very soon will need a room alone. Don't underestimate how much room you'll need for a growing child. Or, maybe you already know you want more than one child. That's probably going to require two bedrooms minimum for the kids.

We mentioned the kitchen above. Cooking meals for a family just works better when you've got some room for appliances and a decent-size island.

  • Amenities—and Then Some
A full-size bathroom with a spacious bathtub is not only a must for a pregnant woman who needs to relax, but also for bathing kids. Some other good things to have:

    • A fenced yard will allow kids to be outdoors and play in the sunshine; also, a yard is essential if you have dogs.
    • You'll need plenty of storage for all that stuff that kids require—bassinets, strollers, toys, diapers, and other supplies.
    • An open floor plan is a big plus when you're cooking and need to keep an eye on the kids in the living room or family room. A big, open area also has some advantages when you're confined, as the recent virus quarantine has shown, or when bad weather keeps you all indoors. It allows the kids to run around and spread out, or when you're all gathered together, you can play games and watch movies.
    • Laundry facilities in the right place will make you a much happier parent, as you wash loads of diapers with an infant or toddler. It's a real boon to have the laundry facilities where you don't have to do stairs. Also, it's best if the laundry room and its noises are away from the kids' rooms.

  • Location Matters
Check out schools, including teacher to student ratios, enrollment trends, and academic improvement. In addition to schools, look at neighborhood amenities such as playgrounds, shopping, restaurants, public transportation (if you will need it), recreational facilities, and walkability. We've seen that close proximity to stores and walkability are really important in a time when we were confined to home, and though none of us know what the future holds, do try to take some of the lessons you've learned from the recent crisis and apply them to your choices for a location.
